Tailed Copper in California (June) - Lycaena arota - Webb Canyon, ~2000 ft. altitude, Los Angeles County, California, USA June 12, 2008
I photographed this handsome fellow on his preferred perch for the day, a Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia). However, he was probably such a regular visitor at this spot last summer with the hopes of locating a female who might be drawn to the several adjacently growing Gooseberry (Ribes sp.) -- this species' larval food plant. I will be searching these plants carefully this Spring as I would love to be able to document the larval stage of this species and submit those images to the Guide.
