Giant Agave Bug - Acanthocephala thomasi

Giant Agave Bug - Acanthocephala thomasi
Fort Huachuca near Sierra Vista, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
January 21, 2009
I looked over the other species of Acanthocephala and the comments here at the BugGuide and looks like this species. It's been over a month since I've seen these on the agaves and Baccharis in the area. While waiting out a rain shower, noticed at least twenty of these at a picnic shelter at 5216 ft elevation. Also note difference in size between these two individuals, presume the larger is a female.

Bugs.
Both of these may be females. Males have greatly thickened hind femora, armed beneath with heavy spikes used in combat over females. This can be an extremely abundant insect.

Thanks
Thanks Eric for the information. I'll get back there and photo these details that you mention.
