Flatheaded Mayfly - Stenonema femoratum

Flatheaded Mayfly - Stenonema femoratum
Eramosa River, Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada
January 13, 2009
Size: 12 mm
In detritus. Size measurement excludes cerci. I think Stenonema sp.

A nymph
A nymph for S. femoratum. Thanks Lloyd!

Stenonema femoratum
The distinctive dorsal abdominal color pattern with pale areas on Ab5 and Ab8-9 is typical of this species. Unlike the former members of Stenonema that are now Maccaffertium, S. femoratum has rounded (rather than truncate) apices on gills 1-6. This species is now the only representative of the genus. (S. tripunctatum is a synonym found in older references.)
