bizarre thing - Icerya purchasi

Size: ranged from 5-10mm

This tree was covered in literally thousands of this bizarre pupa-like creature. None of them displayed any kind of movement, so I'm assuming these are pupas, perhaps of some sort of beetle. There were no adults to be found, with exception of 2 different species of lady beetle, but that doesn't really give enough information to draw a conclusion from. Does anybody know what these things are?

Coming back to this image...

Could this be the Cottony Cushion Scale? They appear to be similar, not to mention that the ladybirds I found on this tree I have since discovered to be R. cardinalis, a predator of the Cottony Cushion Scale.

ah, scales! This was my firs

ah, scales! This was my first real exposure to scale insects so the thought never crossed my mind that that is what they could be, but it all makes sense now. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
