Riffle Beetle Larva - Optioservus

Riffle Beetle Larva - Optioservus
Eramosa River, Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada
January 13, 2009
Size: 5.0 mm
Here's an Elmid larva for the guide. Sifted from detritus, in association with adults of this species. The flattened, armor-plated body, and terminal gill chamber are characteristic (shared with the Lutrochidae, which have rounder abdominal tip and are rarer),

Moved
Moved from Stenelmis crenata.

It's difficult to make out in this view, but the cross section is triangular, not hemicylindrical as in Stenelmis. See here for an example of Stenelmis larva.

Excellent!
Love to see those larval associations :-)
