Grasshopper - Schistocerca

Grasshopper - Schistocerca
Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
July 13, 2008

Schistocerca nymph
This is a female last (probably 5th) instar nymph of a Bird Grasshopper. I expect that it is most likely S. shoshone, but I don't know how to tell the nymphs apart with certainty, so it is just an educated guess. There seem to be four species of Bird Grasshopper in Maricopa County (S. shoshone, S. near lineata, S. albolineata, and S. nitens), and it is possible that it is one of the other three.
