Indoor Dweller - Gibbium aequinoctiale

Indoor Dweller - Gibbium aequinoctiale
New York City, New York, USA
January 31, 2009
Size: 1/8 inch, including legs
My 10th floor, 1960s construction apartment has harbored so many insects over the years: spiders, pillbugs, silverfish, roaches, ladybugs, carpet beetles, mosquitos, flies, etc. I found two of these in my wooden bookshelves. I often see this species indoors during the winter (restaurant, office). I used to think they were ticks.

cool!
I couldn't resist clicking it!

Spider beetle.
Family is Anobiidae, genus is Gibbium. They are common "stored product pests" and populations seem to linger for decades in homes far older than yours. They pose no health threat that I am aware of. Simply find the infested material and discard it. See if you can get any clearer shots of these. We don't have that many in the guide that are even 'this' good:-)
