Great Black Wasp - Sphex pensylvanicus - male

Great Black Wasp - Sphex pensylvanicus - Male
Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County, New York, USA
July 17, 2008
The live wasp wings had more of a blue sheen which is diminished in the photo.
I think that the white markings behind the eyes may be real rather then reflections, they show in both images.
Found on a tall Onion plant of some sort in the vegetable garden, a fast moving wasp.

Sphecidae.
Looks like a male (slender build, really long antennae) of Sphex pennsylvanica, the "great black wasp." Common species.

Sphecidae
Thank you Eric, ID help always much appreciated.
