Akalyptoischion chandleri

Akalyptoischion chandleri
near Ojito Wilderness, Sandoval County, New Mexico, USA
January 7, 2009
Size: 1.2 mm
In the packrat nest there were lots of these. They are smaller than A. dyskrito*s and have the antennae with 2-segment club (segment 9 is a little larger than 8 but much smaller than 10). I have found lots of these in oak/pine detritus in NM, and they were close to Andrews' chandleri. Now with the better description in the recent revision by Hartley et al, I am quite confident in this ID. Chandleri was only known from AZ.

collection?
How do you go about collecting these from the nest - Berlese funnel of nesting materials?

yes
Berlese funnel. These Neotoma tend to nest under large rocks, all entrances covered with cholla and sticks. I bring tools and pull away the thorny stuff and collect the soft nest material; trowel up the pellets and any moist detritus. I invariably find the nest rebuilt if I return a week later.
