Sphecidae - Prionyx

Sphecidae - Prionyx
Mescal Rd, towards Rincon Mnts, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
September 7, 2007
The wasp is big - the Trichodes is 12 mm

Nectar for everybody
A fly, a Clerid beetle and a Sphecid Wasp at once. These "flowers" remind me of a South-American Senecio sp. widely cultivated throughout Mediterranean France, flowering also in September and very attractive for many insects.
The Wasp is a female of the tribe Sphecini, most likely genus Prionyx based of the strong legs. But confirmation by a North-American expert is needed.

yes
a Prionyx

Baccharis salicifolia
Seep Willow. One of our two Baccharis species that are probably good for 80% of all the day active insects we photograph in Arizona. But I do remember that Senecio from the Mediterranean.

Thanks for the info
And I should have known, since the "Senecio" I meant is actually Baccharis halimifolia...
