Bayou George, Bay County, Florida, USA
July 20, 2005
Size: Approx. 3 inches long
Saw this cat feeding on a plant growing in a ditch. Ditch has water and fry in it. Cat is feeding low - about 3 inches from water. Never saw one before. I was out photographing dragons and damsels, around 2 in the afternoon, today, 7-22-05. First siting.
I think it may be a moth.

What do you think of Banded Sphinx - Eumorpha fasciata
Wow that's amazing Joshua -- two comments in the same minute with the same reference!

Banded Sphinx
Hi again May! You are correct, a moth, specifically a Banded Sphinx (Eumorpha fasciata). I've photographed one in Merchants Millpond State Park in northeastern NC, along with what appeared to be a bigger, older, greener conspecific. There are a few other photos of this species already on BugGuide, though only one that rivals yours for color:

My photos were on slides, not scanned yet...

Thanks so much, Josh.

I appreciate it.

Thank you.
Thank you for posting this image here, May. It is a GREAT photo, too! I told you we had lots of moth and caterpillar experts here:-)
