Thanks for the info margarethe; sorry I no longer have the specimen. I don't ever remember seeing one before.

 
There are
quite a few species in the southwestern U.S. but they are rarely seen, except after rains in the early spring when they leave the ant nests and wander about. Bill Warner in Phoenix is an expert on the group, as well as all scarabs.
