Size: approx 1 inch
I have images of what appear to be the same insect (same coloring, same markings) taken from the same location in 1997. This was taken in an alpine environment.

Thanks for the ID. Try the high peaks of the Adirondacks in July, seems to be when they're out and about

Would it be weird that I found this about 4 miles and 3,000 vertical feet from the nearest sugar maple?

While the name implies a close relationship with Sugar Maples, it can be found on other Acer spp.
