Cicada in California - Platypedia

Cicada in California - Platypedia
Webb Canyon, ~2000 ft. altitude, Los Angeles County, California, USA
June 9, 2005
Photographed in chaparral/mixed oak habitat. Any help in obtaining a conclusive ID for this cicada (or even just narrowing down the possible options) would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Platypedia sp.

I moved the image to Genus. Thanks for taking the time to review my image, Bill!

Platypedia sp.
Thank you for moving it!...and I'm certain this is a Platypedia sp...hopefully I can swing back around and try to get a narrower id. to species.

I'd like to sort out the cicadas a.s.a.p.!
So many nice images, but it's a bit of a quagmire navigating and using the site for good cicada id, and I know I'll make mistakes ;) ... but for now, I'm gonna make some big sweeps through the images in an attempt to put things where they best fit.

There is still a tremendous amount of work with these here on Bugguide! First step, put things in taxonomic groups for better reference and use. Second, more thorough scrutiny of images to better place them in species nodes - when/where possible.

Cicada reference...
It really would be great to have the cicadas more organized. I'm sure your help will be greatly appreciated by many. Thanks, again!

I live in a canyon in the foothills of S. California, and judging from the non-stop singing in summer, there must be a rather plentiful population here... it's just finding them that is a bit tricky! I have a few more individuals that I have photographed that I will try to post soon. BTW, if it is of any use to you in making your IDs, I can almost always provide larger, higher-resolution files -- just make a request.

I plan to take pictures of the local Platypedia scotti this spring so that we can add another species to the group. It was named after an old friend of mine, Franklin T. Scott.

...for the suggestions. It's times like this that I really wish I could wrap my head around how to successfully use a key. The wing venation is pretty clear in this picture, and according to this key on the Singing Insects of N. America website, that should help to at least narrow down the genera if not actually lead to a species ID. Feeling like a complete wimp, I humbly ask, "Would anyone else like to give it a go?"

Oh, and for whatever it's worth, if memory serves me correctly, I located this cicada by its singing, which should make it a male.

Check Okanagana
I've shot only one California cicada, which was subsequently IDed to that genus. Apparently, there are many Okanagana ssp. in our state.

Maybe something in Platypedia
