Entomophthora Attack - Pollenia rudis

Entomophthora Attack - Pollenia rudis
Cambridge, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
February 15, 2009
Of a number of cluster flies (Pollenia) at windowsills, most were dead from Entomophthora infection. I collected some living flies, including one which quickly expired. Soon, bands of fungal spores began to sprout from this individual.

The fly was mounted shortly after the infection began, and images were taken over twelve-hour intervals.

Note: observation was made in an artificial, unventilated environment in the absence of wind dispersal and weathering. I just wanted to record the sporulation process.
