unknown leaf hopper - Graphocephala atropunctata

unknown leaf hopper - Graphocephala atropunctata
Ventura, Ventura County, California, USA
May 28, 2005
Size: about 3/8 inch
Very careful critter, difficult to get close to. Subdued light, but not heavily shaded. Because of their hopping, they are apparent at all times of the day, but only easily visable here just prior to sunset when they seem willing to come to the surface of the leaves.

Hordnia atropunctata
Commonly known as the blue leafhopper.

Beautiful species!
What a beautiful species of hopper! What you say agrees with what I have been noticing, that dusk and even the early part of the night seem to be great times to see hoppers. They come to my BugLight, but stay there only in the early part of the evening.
