True Katydid - Amblycorypha oblongifolia - male

True Katydid - Amblycorypha oblongifolia - Male
Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois, USA
July 15, 2005
This is the first katydid that I have seen this season. It wouldn't sit still very well for me to photograph. It seemed that once it knew I had located it, it didn't rely on it's camoflage at all.

Seen These
I've seen these at camp out on the porch of our bunk at night. I had on sitting on my finger. He/She was cute!

They bite :)
I was camping at the State park near Branson, MO and many were calling in the evening. I tracked the sound down to one, thinking that it was a spcies of cicada that I hadn't heard before and wanting a visual ID. I also had it sitting on my finger, until it bit me!--doesn't break the skin, but good for a startle!

Great shot, wrong ID:-)
This is a wonderful portrait of one of the round-headed katydids in the genus Amblycorypha, probably A. oblongifolia, though I see there are suddenly several more species than the two I was once so familiar with:-) This one is a male. Females lack the stridulatory apparatus (brown wedge near the thorax on this specimen), and have a very large, curved ovipositor.
