Tiny Orbweaver - Araneus diadematus - female

Tiny Orbweaver - Araneus diadematus - Female
Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington, USA
March 2, 2009
Size: 5 mm
I found this little spider dangling from a pine tree in my back yard.

I'm sending this image to Rod for his opinion, but other comments are welcome.

This is a juvenile Araneus diadematus. The vast majority of this species' members hatch around May Day and become adult in September, but a few (probably under 5%) fail to mature their first year, pass the winter in the stage you found, and mature their second year - often too early to find a mate. ~ Rod Crawford
