Brachiacantha tau
from Gordon (1), this appears to be Brachiacantha tau LeConte, 1859. Gordon describes B. tau as with some elytral pattern variation throughout its range (Idaho to Mexico) from north to south. Yours appears to match the northern color pattern, and is probably a male. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any web images to support this determination for B. tau (so yours is the first! :). But if you get to a library with Gordon's ref., the b&w line drawing is an exact match.

Lady beetle?
This is probably a coccinellid, but I have never seen anything like it. Neat find:-)
