Anthrax sp. - Anthrax

Anthrax sp. - Anthrax
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
March 19, 2006
Size: BL ~ 12-12.5 mm
We found this bee fly dead, killed by a crab spider, in Desert Sunflower (Geraea canescens) in mid-March (and have the specimen). I cannot seem to find anything in Hull's Bee Flies of the World wings that seem like this wing venation with a vein connecting R2+3 with R4. My first impression was a Lepidanthrax, but that obviously was wrong.

ID
This is Anthrax. Beyond that, I won't say now. That extra crossvein is found in some species (or specimens) not only of Anthrax, but Paravilla, Chrysanthrax, Lepidanthrax, and others.

Anthrax
Your ID is invaluable in this case, Andy. I never could have discovered this genus by myself. How interesting that wing venation can vary considerably with a genus. I have noticed how in a few cases the wing venation varies considerably on the two wings of the same individual. Thanks so much for all your help.

ID
Lynn,
Anthrax daphne could be a fit. I haven't got the revision to this group of Anthrax, but Hartmut Wisch does, and he ID'ed one from CA that looks close.

Anthrax daphne
I checked out Hartmut Wisch's image of A. daphne and it does look very similar. The venation and dots seem to be the same. The banding on the abdomen seems a trifle different, but that could be a sex difference? Thanks s much for the ID. Andy. Your help is so much appreciated!
