Cicindela - Cicindela limbalis

Cicindela - Cicindela limbalis
Antelope Island, Davis County, Utah, USA
March 3, 2009
I was surprised to see this beetle out this early in the year, although it was about 65 degrees. I only got a good photo because it couldn't fly well because of its wound and it finally gave up trying to elude me.

I've gone back and forth on this...
...but I think I'm ready to conclude that this is actually Cicindela limbalis, based on the distinctly angled middle maculation and its occurrence in Utah (I don't believe denverensis gets that far west).

Thanks, Ted.
I'm sorry it's taken so long to say thanks for the ID. I found your posting buried in my sent mail.

I'm inclined...
...to say Cicindela denverensis, but the little bit of reddish blush keeps me from ruling out C. limbalis. These two species are closely related, variable in coloration and maculation, and can be difficult to separate in areas where they co-occur - perhaps due to hybridization.
