I checked the specimens in the Smokies collection and Liz is right about the character states mentioned. The images are of Bombus fernaldae.

B. perplexus would have no black spot on thorax, much more yellow hair on lower face, eyes placed further back on the head, and would have denser fur. This is the "yellow tide" version of fernaldae (males at high elevations with buckets of yellow).
