Strange Cocoon

Strange Cocoon
Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois, USA
July 26, 2005
Size: 5mm
Does anyone have an idea of what this might be. It looks to be a cocoon of some sort, but I have no idea as to what came out of it. Thanks.

Moved
Moved from Cocoons.

Moved
Moved from Braconid Wasps. An ichneumonid, possibly Charops (compare with this one).

Braconid wasp cocoon.
Those ornately-marked, pendulous cocoons usually turn out to be those of braconid wasps. Nice image of a superb specimen!

Web Photo
I found another photo on the web at http://www.sactorose.org/rosebug/ibeneficials.htm that shows what appears to be a similar cocoon. It talks about parasitic wasps as well, so I think you are correct Eric. Thanks for the comments.

Keep finding these
I photographed a few recently. One still had the remains of a caterpillar higher up the thread that it must have emerged from prior to forming the cocoon. I brought one home but it never emerged. I wonder if they need to be suspended to develop properly.

Reminds us of
of Troy's but no one has ever put an ID to that yet.

Continuing
The mystery continues! I am almost certain I photographed one of these about twelve years ago, but since I could never ID it the photo undoubtedly has no keywords and I would never be able to find it in my files!
