Cocoon or chrysalis? - Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis

Size: 3 inches long
I noticed this cocoon last fall (October?) and at the time it was encased in the brown, thread-like formations, which were smoothed down and all pointed in the same direction--toward the bottom tip. The brown threads have thinned considerably in the past month and are more disorganized.
