Blister Beetle, Nemognatha sp 3664 - Nemognatha

Blister Beetle, Nemognatha sp 3664 - Nemognatha
Alviso Baylands, Santa Clara County, California, USA
July 6, 2008
Size: ~13 mm
This one appears to be a Blister Beetle, family Meloidae, genus Nemognatha, species cf lurida.

The Blister Beetle ID corresponds with the observation that the insect appeared to be feeding on pollen; the Cantharids feed on soft insects, while Meloid adults are reported to eat flowers and leaves.

pls explain how the species ID was obtained?
[members of this genus are very tough to ID form pix]

How about Nemognatha?
This one is even from your neighborhood

von Linné's genus Cantharis included both what we call nowadays Cantaridae and Meloidae, so... you see my point?
