Carpenter ant - Camponotus pennsylvanicus - Female
Palisades-Kepler Park, Linn County, Iowa, USA
March 17, 2009
Size: 15 mm or so
Found in a rotten log. It was sluggish, possibly waking up from a long winter nap? It was alone. It appears to have 3 faint goldish bands and some light gold 'hairs' on the abdomen.

Carpenter Ant Queen
Camponotus species but I don't know which one. Might be Camponotus pennsylvanicus.

Our Iowa ant expert, James Trager, says yes to the id of Camponotus Pennsylvanicus. I'll move it as soon as I learn how to move things around on the site.
