Size: 20 mm
Philip Kline had this tentatively ID'd at Cutebrera austeni, a packrat parasite. A lot of them were hilltoping here.

Cuterebra austeni
Hi Philip. This is a nice shot of a male Cuterebra austeni. Females have a darker pleuron. The males lek on hilltops in spring in AZ. The host mammal is Neotoma albigula in your area and Neotoma lepida in western AZ. Will have to try to get out with you again in AZ next spring.

Sorry I missed that trip:-) You don't see bots very often except for the hilltopping thing.
