Tracks in the trees: bark beetle engravings

Tracks in the trees: bark beetle engravings
Madera Canyon, Super Trail 134, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
March 13, 2009
Size: Variable
Bark beetle engravings are a lot like fingerprints: No two are alike, but the different genera often bore characteristic "galleries" that are quite distinctive. I forgot to check what kind of tree this is I am embarrassed to say....I would encourage others to take images of these patterns as examples of insect "signs." I imaged these with a Canon PowerShot SD1000 (Elph).
