Size: 1 inch+
I don't have exact measurements for this guy, but it appeared to be 1.5-2x larger than a honeybee, about the same size or a little larger than a yellow jacket. I suspect this is a bee of some type? If so, its the largest bee I've ever seen.

Wasp.
This is a female solitary wasp in the family Scoliidae. They dig up a scarab beetle grub and lay an egg on it. The larva that hatches becomes an external parasite of the grub. Genus of this one is Campsomeris, not sure of the species.

ah! thanks for pointing me in the right direction Eric. Someday I'll learn how to tell the difference between a bee and a wasp... till then you're just gonna have to put up with my mistakes I suppose, haha.
