Tibicen lyricen form lyricen - Neotibicen lyricen - male

Tibicen lyricen form lyricen - Neotibicen lyricen - Male
Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, USA
September 15, 2008
Collected and photographed by Bill Reynolds, NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
Date approximate--month correct.
DSCN3179
Bill states:
Largely replacing the coastal lyric cicada, var. virescens (typically found within a few miles of the coast), populations of T. lyricen occupying the Coastal Plain (both Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains) are often quite large and boldly patterned.

Specimens collected in this region are usually larger and more colorful than the smaller darker varieties seen in the inland higher elevations of the Southeast (i.e. Fall-line Hills, Piedmont, Cumberland and Appalachia) and belong to the variety known as T. lyricen f. lyricen. Material similar to this specimen can be found in the Coastal Plain of eastern NC, eastern SC, s. Georgia, s. Alabama and much of Mississippi, e. Louisiana and areas adj. to the Mississippi River proper.
