Deer Bot Fly (Cephenemyia sp.) - Cephenemyia jellisoni - male

Deer Bot Fly (Cephenemyia sp.) - Cephenemyia jellisoni - Male
Pusch Peak, Santa Catalina Mountains, Pima County, Arizona, USA
March 18, 2009
Several of these were hilltopping. Three of four were jockeying for position on the uppermost branches of an Arizona Rosewood that was closest to the summit. They ignored other similar rosewoods that were just a little further downslope. Jeff Boettner, Entomology Professor at UMass believes they are probably C. apicata.

Needs a new Guide Page
John:

This should be Cephenemyia jellisoni, not Cuterebra. A new guide page needs to be created for the species. Thanks for the follow-up Jeff.

Cephenemyia jellisoni
Hi Philip,
Finally getting around to these guys. I am going to overrule myself on this one. The strong yellow back with a black crossband and your location in AZ says this is Cephenemyia jellisoni.
Jeff
