Blow Fly sp.? - Copestylum mexicanum - male - female

Blow Fly sp.? - Copestylum mexicanum - Male Female
Pusch Peak, Santa Catalina Mountains, Pima County, Arizona, USA
March 18, 2009
Size: Quite large, c. 3/4"
These mating flies were near the summit of Pusch Peak in scrub oak, Arizona rosewood habitat. They were quite large and about 3/4 the size of nearby rat bot flies (larger than a typical horse fly). I don't really have any idea of what they are, but am guessing they may be Calliphorids.

Syrphids.
A pair of Copestylum mexicana. I know! Huge compared to most syrphids:-) Nice to see the bot fly posts. I'll have to make a trip to "A" Mountain now....

Thanks Eric
Should have know that one. I submitted photos of one last fall!

LOL!
I forget they are out in the spring, too. Plus, the lateral view image doesn't capture the wing bands....and...I am convinced spring specimens are decidedly smaller than the autumn generation.
