American bird grasshopper - Schistocerca americana - Female
Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve/Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Jackson County, Mississippi, USA

Size: ~ 7 cm
This grasshopper was found in a wet pine savanna near a freshwater swamp. Need help with the identification.

American bird grasshopper.
Hey, welcome to BugGuide, Gretchen! Thanks for introducing yourself on your bio page, too. You do very interesting work....This 'hopper is Schistocerca americana, the American bird grasshopper. Don't know how you managed to get this close! Great images, thank you for sharing.
