Tarantula hawk on creosote - Pepsis chrysothemis - Tucson, Greasewood Park, Pima County, Arizona, USA March 28, 2009 Size: large:-)
No mistaking this species with its vermillion wings. This female was nectaring on the few remaining creosote flowers at the edge of an arroyo ("wash") in mid-morning. This is probably the most common of Tucson's six species of Pepsis. Imaged with my new Canon PowerShot SX10 IS, on "auto" using the optical zoom.
