grasshopper - Schistocerca nitens - male

grasshopper - Schistocerca nitens - Male
Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California, USA
April 1, 2009
Size: about 2 inches
Shortly after I took these photos, it jumped away, and met with a much larger (3-4 inch) individual and proceeded in mating... I assume then, that the larger individual is female and this one is a male? This is a very common grasshopper around here... my amateur guess is the Gray Bird.

right on both counts
It's Schistocerca nitens, and it's a male.
