Dr. Ascher, these are the best of the lot on your bee, I am afraid; that was one shy insect. If I am able, I will head back to the same patch and try to get some better ones this weekend. I appreciate you letting me tag along. The scientific names all went in one ear and out the other but I still learned quite a bit and enjoyed making your acquaintance.

It was great to meet you. Thanks for posting these and your other excellent photos.

This bee flies so fast I'm impressed that you were able to get these photos.

It is a female of an undescribed species of Osmia (Melanosmia) resembling O. sandhouseae (but smaller and with shorter hairs on the head, etc.) that seems to be a specialist on Calamintha ashei in sand scrub habitat.
