This is the third similar moth that I saw in two weeks. I saw them each once and no more.

Possibly...

 
Mint Moths!
If these moths are fond of mint they are in the right yard. We're overgrown with the stuff. My other submission was also id'ed as orphisalis but this one was much redder and had a light band on the trailing edge of its wing. Was the other simply more worn?

I'm not an expert, but I would suggest that this is Pyrausta californicalis. I've seen them in Sunnyvale, on the south peninsula of the Bay Area. The bright orange color, and the distinctive underwing are pretty similar looking to me.
