Green eyed fly - Chrysanthrax

Green eyed fly - Chrysanthrax
Lake Placid - Archbold Biological Station, Highlands County, Florida, USA
March 31, 2009
It looks like it should fit under Bombyliidae, but I did not find anything with green eyes that looked like a match.

Moved from Villini.

ID
What an interesting fly! It belongs in the Villini, probably Villa, but the abdominal scale pattern is atypical. Maybe those more familiar with the eastern fauna will diagnose it.

Chrysanthrax??
We have a specimen of this fly in the Guelph collection (also from Archbold), but I haven't been able to identify it. It has some similarities with Chrysanthrax lepidotoides and I suspect it's related to that species, but I can't say anything beyond that.

Chrysanthrax?
Sounds as good as anything. As I've said before, many diverse taxa have been heaved into Chrysanthrax. This may well be another.

Further information
I emailed these photos to Dr. Deyrup at Archbold and he provided this information:

"This species appears to be in the genus Villa, although its snout is unusually long. I have only found it in scrub. I provisionally consider it an undescribed scrub species, and have put it on our list under “scrub rosemary bee fly.” "

This example was photographed in a Rosemary Bald.

Cool!
Thanks for the additional information. Maybe this means you get to name it?

Thank you
Andy. I will move it to tribe and maybe someone else can narrow it down.
