Bee Fly - Poecilanthrax tegminipennis

Bee Fly - Poecilanthrax tegminipennis
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
July 30, 2005
Can anyone identify the species of this bee fly?

Wierd
I didn't notice when originally identifying this image, but this fly has sectoral crossveins in both wings (connecting vein r2+3 with r4). This is typically a character of Exoprosopa and a few other genera (only the very different Dipalta in Ontario) rather than Poecilanthrax, although occasional flies of other genera do have an aberrant crossvein of this type (typically in one wing only). I think my original ID is still correct though.

Moved from Bee Flies.

Poecilanthrax tegminipennis
This is Poecilanthrax tegminipennis. The entirely brown wings and extensive yellow pile are distinctive among Ontario bee flies.

Thank you very much, Joel.

Maybe a specialist on Bombyliidae will see it here.
