Tarantula hawk on mesquite - Pepsis mexicana - female

Tarantula hawk on mesquite - Pepsis mexicana - Female
Tucson, Pima Community College West Campus, Pima County, Arizona, USA
April 2, 2009
This is the smallest of our local Pepsis species, and one of the earliest to appear. The mesquite trees on the campus are ornamental, and watered, so they bloom early and often. Imaged this female with a Canon SX10 IS in "auto" mode using the zoom, then cropping the resulting image. Probably should have tried using the flash, eh?:-(
