Tibicen pronotalis walkeri (syn. Tibicen walkeri) - Megatibicen pronotalis - female

Tibicen pronotalis walkeri, (syn. T. walkeri) - FEMALE:
Tuscumbia, Colbert Co., Alabama (Aug 2008)
Coll. M. Reynolds (+ B. & G. Reynolds)

Locally abundant in the mid-South, T. pronotalis walkeri seems to be most associated with creeks and waterways where willow is a dominant feature of the vegetative pattern. Although common, they are most easily collected at lights, since the habitats they occupy often present difficulty navigating.

They may also be found in older established residential areas or farms with nearby creeks and an abundance of small trees.

Those from the upper mid-South (east of the Miss. R.) are most often bright green with reddish lateral mesonotal patches. The pronotum is usually patternless or ever so slightly maculated with two small comma-shaped dark markings.

NOTE on Geographic variations in Alabama!

Replacing the bright green form representative of n. Alabama, populations in the Black Belt Prairies (Prairie Remnants) of wc. Alabama are composed of 2 color forms:
1) Many are not unlike the nw. Alabama populations and are as pictured above.
2) Half or greater are charcteristically a more ochreous or yellow-greenish-tan (not as striking in color). These cicadas are found in areas where cottonwood is common. Not unlike the n. Alabama material, they typically lack pronotal markings, however, if present - they appear as small paired comma-shaped markings.
