I don't even know the common name for this one - Xyonysius basalis
Lake Placid, Highlands County, Florida, USA
April 5, 2009
Size: roughly 10mm

Moved
Moved from Seed Bugs.

neither do i ---
but i hardly know common names of anything :-/
suspect Xyonysius basalis (Dallas) would be nice to get it confirmed

opinion of Merrill Sweet:
"Xylonysius is probably correct based on the size, 10 mm!? and the species does seem to be basalis not californicus, although californicus is much commoner!"

Thank you
I am going to start reading about seed bugs now. At least now I know a common name :-). 10mm is a rough estimate, size estimates seem to be a weak area for me. My day job is law enforcement and I confess my only frame of reference for such small creatures is to compare them to the size of ammunition casings. This one's length appeared close to the radius of a .40 cal S&W, which would be 10mm, but I could be off several millimeters too.
