I think I've seen a picture of these on bugguide before, but I can't remember what it was from. I believe it was on a red oak. It was attached by a thick strand to a branch but not actually on the tree itself.

Spider egg sacs?
I believe these are spider egg sacs, maybe from a basilica spider?
