Slender Meadow Katydid - Conocephalus fasciatus - male

Slender Meadow Katydid - Conocephalus fasciatus - Male
Southpoint Mall area, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
July 28, 2005
Size: 16 mm
This Conocephalus flew into a wall next to the sidewalk tables of a restaurant where I was having dinner at about 7:00 p.m., on a cloudy evening. I captured it and chilled it for photography. (These things jump away otherwise.) Size was measured at 25 mm, head to tip of folded wings, 16 mm body length. Green cerci indicate it is Slender Meadow Katydid, Conocephalus fasciatus. The antennae were broken off at some point, unfortunately.

Identification references: Capinera, Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets, (1) p. 181, says that the male Slender Meadow-Katydid, Concoephalus fasciatus, has green cerci. The description of the cerci, and the body, fits this photo as well. See Singing Insects of North Americaa: genus page and species account.

Green Cerci
Green Cerci occur in most Conocephalus. I just found that out from T. Walker.
