Black Caterpillar Hunter - Calosoma sayi

Black Caterpillar Hunter - Calosoma sayi
Hwy 55 and Sedwick, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
July 28, 2005
Size: 25 mm
Found running around under a lighted wall, no doubt chasing the insects attracted to the lights. I captured and posed the beetle for these photos. (Chilling has little effect--I have to put these in a round plastic container. After a minute or so of racing around, they usually calm down and allow some photos.) Released into my garden after the photo session.

I'm trying to document the characters used to key this species given by Ciegler. (1) See the linked photo of the pronotum.

I have a similar problem with a specimen I collected in GA. Have trouble seeing the 'basal setigerous puncture' but all other characters key out to C. sayi in the carabids of SC book. The foveae on my specimen are smaller and more green too, rather than gold, but I bet that varies from place to place
