Phidippus adumbratus
Found one of these climbing down my living room wall. Wish I took a photo before releasing outside. He was spectacular.
Have lived in West Los Angeles, Santa Monica all my life. NEVER seen one before.
I found this posted: "Charles Hogue in his book Insects of the Los Angeles Basin has identified this species as Phidippus formosus"
Can this be confirmed?

Phidippus Adumbratus
Hi Gwen, I just had the priviledge of seeing this spider outside my door, on a neighbor's ledge. It was so beautiful and fasinating that I got my camera and felt a little fear as I tried to get a couple of shots before he flew at me or fled. I didn't know they flew or what it was until I saw it on bugguide. Very interesting, huh? It's a species of black widow???
I'd be interested to know your experience. I live at Barrington & Wilshire, near you, I think.

Tina

Definitely not a black widow!
Hello, Tina.

Just to make certain there's no confusion, this gorgeous spider is not any kind of widow spider. The group of spiders that it belongs to are collectively known as "Jumping Spiders" and they are completely harmless to humans and pets. As their name suggests, they are capable of amazing leaps into the air, occasionally onto a nearby unsuspecting person. I like to think of them as being the friendliest of our spiders and they are quite charming and lovely to spend time with if you give them a chance.

Glad you got a chance to see one!

All my best,
Harsi
