Possible Cedar Bark Beetle? - Polyphylla - male

Possible Cedar Bark Beetle? - Polyphylla - Male
Near Trinidad , Colorado, USA
August 20, 2008
Size: approximately 6 or 7 cm

A scarab rather...
Looks like a Polyphylla, one of the 'June beetles'. The white elytra stripes and expanded antennae (males) are diagnostic.

likely Polyphylla decemlineata
- for reference. These are quite common in California as the weather warms up, not sure about their range but the guide has them in CO. The noted size is still large for P. deemlineata. The ones I've seen are usually just about an inch in size but seem larger.

size[-related] matters
  • the size of this one is overestimated at least twice (slightly over an inch, actually)
  • bark beetle size is mostly 1-3 mm (0.1-0.3 cm) and never exceeds 1 cm; see images here
