Grounded empress - Asterocampa leilia - Male
Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, Pima County, Arizona, USA
April 17, 2009
A trio of horseback riders startled this specimen from its original perch, but that got it closer to me:-) This species habitually perches on the ground, in this case the very rocky creekside riparian zone. Imaged with a Canon SX10 IS in "auto" using the zoom and cropping the resulting image. Time was late morning or early afternoon.
