Beetle - Pterostichus melanarius

Beetle - Pterostichus melanarius
Lower Mainland, British Columbia, Canada
April 19, 2009
I found it hiding underneath a dead duck's leg.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Moved tentatively
Moved from Pterostichus.

Ground beetle.
This is a ground beetle, family Carabidae. Probably preying on maggots or something at the carcass. This one looks to be in the genus Pterostichus, but you may wish to wait for a second opinion:-)
