Caterpillar Hunter, Fiery Searcher
Hi Charley,
I believe you have pictures of the Caterpillar Hunter or Fiery Searcher, Calosoma scrutator.
They're such a colorful beetle, and big!
Here's some more info.

Thanks--
Fiery searcher was what I had been thinking, but the color seemed off compared with the images on BugGuide. I guess that can be attributed to my flash though.

picture color note
The color space your camera is set to will affect color, sRGB vs. Adobe1998, as well as the flash and white balance settings. I'm not an expert on the taxonomy stuff, so we could wait for an expert opinion on the beetle. I don't know what else it would be though. As far as I know that the only one that looks like that. Here are a few pics I took of a couple of them. As I recall it was super tough to get them to be still, and with 105mm and 1.5x crop factor, I had to be kind of far from them where I couldn't control the situation very well. :)
